What began as a single bridge in a remote corner of Nepal has grown into something much larger - a bridge between people, cultures, and possibilities.
The Beyond the Bridge Foundation builds connections that open doors to education, sustainable livelihoods, and lasting friendships.
If you found us through the Friends of Nepal Spring Newsletter, thank you.
My journey with Bajura began as a Peace Corps volunteer in 1977, and continues today through the Beyond the Bridge Foundation.
We’re glad you’re here.

In 1977, a single bridge was built in a remote village in far-western Nepal.
It connected more than two sides of a river - it connected lives!
As a young Peace Corps volunteer, I helped build that suspension bridge in the village of Bhaunera in Bajura District. Nearly five decades later, I returned, this time with two of my sons, to see the new, larger bridge that stands there today.
What we found was more than a bridge. It was a thriving community of homes, shops, a large Health Post and a K-10 school. There were children and grandchildren of the people I once worked beside. Many remembered the original bridge, and the friendships it represented. That visit became something more than a return. It became a beginning.
The Beyond the Bridge Foundation was created to carry that connection forward - building bridges that matter: between generations, between local ideas and global resources, and between dreams and opportunity.
Our mission is to empower individuals and communities by connecting people, resources, and ideas to create meaningful opportunities for progress and growth.
Rooted in long-term relationships and guided by compassion, we support those working to lift themselves and their communities, helping good ideas become practical, life-changing actions.
We don't arrive with solutions. We build them through relationships that have grown over generations.
Our work is rooted in trust, shaped by local voices, and focused on small steps that lead to lasting change.

The roots of Beyond the Bridge Foundation go back to a small village in Bajura, Nepal, where a Peace Corps volunteer helped build a suspension bridge in 1977. Nearly five decades later, those relationships still exist.
Our work is grounded in friendships that have developed over generations. These relationships help ensure that the projects we support are guided by trust and a genuine understanding of local needs.

We believe the best ideas come from the people who live and work in the communities we serve.
Rather than arriving with predetermined solutions, BtBF listens first. Local teachers, farmers, entrepreneurs, and community leaders help identify the opportunities that matter most. Our role is to help connect those ideas with resources that can help bring them to life.

Meaningful change often begins with simple, practical steps.
A warm coat for a student.
Support for a local enterprise.
Encouragement for a young writer.
These may seem like small actions, but over time they help strengthen communities and create opportunities that can grow for generations.

The original suspension bridge built in Bhaunera in 1977 served the community for nearly forty years before it was lost to a powerful flood.
But the story didn’t end there. A new and larger bridge now stands in its place - a symbol of what cooperation and shared effort can achieve.
Beyond the Bridge Foundation carries that same spirit forward by connecting people, resources, and ideas so communities can pursue their own visions for the future.
We support schools and students in remote communities by helping meet needs that fall outside limited local budgets. From warm-clothes drives to writing contests, library support, and emerging youth programs like trail running, we partner closely with local leaders who understand their community best.
Our goal is simple:
Open doors for young people so they can imagine and pursue a future filled with possibility.
We help communities grow economic opportunities that fit their land, their culture, and their identity. This includes eco- and agri-tourism, organic agriculture, local enterprise, and small business development.
Whether it’s supporting the Olive Eco Village Hotel, trekking initiatives, rafting programs, or farmers exploring new markets, we focus on projects that can create lasting, local income while preserving cultural and natural heritage.
Stories create understanding. Understanding creates connection.
We help share the stories of communities often overlooked - writers, students, farmers, guides, and local leaders whose voices deserve to be heard. Through film, photography, blogs, translations, and partnerships, we work to ensure these stories reach beyond the mountains and touch people around the world.
As the organization grows, we are building relationships and exploring partnerships that align with our mission of connecting people, resources, and ideas.
Several collaborations are already taking shape through long-standing friendships and shared interests in education, sustainable development, and storytelling.
BtBF is working with local entrepreneur Janesh Bhandari to explore the development of the Karnali Eco Center near Kolti in Bajura District. The project aims to promote eco-tourism, agriculture, and educational experiences that highlight the natural beauty and cultural traditions of Nepal’s far western region.
Through the Voices from the Hills storytelling initiative, BtBF is sharing writing and reflections from individuals living in remote mountain communities.
BtBF also offers informal guidance and mentorship to emerging local entrepreneurs. Recent examples include conversations with filmmaker and guide Manoj Regmi as he develops plans for a coffee shop and homestay in Martadi that could support visitors exploring Bajura.

If you have a partnership idea - big or small - we’d be honored to connect.

The strongest bridges are built through the words that connect us.
Across the hills of far-western Nepal are voices rarely heard beyond their own communities. Through essays, poetry, reflections, and personal narratives, we aim to highlight individuals whose words offer insight into the culture, resilience, and spirit of the communities where Beyond the Bridge Foundation works.
These are stories of daily life, resilience, and perspective - voices that are rarely heard beyond the hills.
Connecting people, resources, and opportunities for progress and growth.
